1-2-5 Climb! Highest Point in NW

The Thursday Group, retired Johannesburg & Magaliesberg members (jokingly referred to as the ‘coffin dodgers'), walks in the Magaliesberg every Thursday – as the name implies. We did our 125-climb-hike on Thursday 6 Oct. Seven of us walked via ‘Bertram’s Nek’ south of Tonquani, to the highest point in NW Province, a point near the Nooitgedacht towers, as was determined by MCSA surveyor Ken Thrash (with all his instruments) in 2008. The highest point is in fact the top of a big boulder, marked with a cairn.

With a GPS to make sure we were on course, we headed that way. Mike Richardson however, insisted on reaching the highest point in the Magaliesberg (at the towers; and not to be accessed) because communication between coffin dodgers are not always the best and he thought that’s where we were going! While he walked doggedly on into the distance and out of sight, it left the rest of us stranded at the NW cairn. After a while Roger followed him because he might just have gotten arrested for being at the towers.... they came back (Mike with a sore knee) after he had accomplished his mission...so in effect he cheated and bagged two peaks!

Once he was back at the cairn, we had to take the group photo. My camera, the only one with a time lapse facility, kept refusing to take a picture (I now know the time lapse does not work when the flash is on) and also falling flat on its face every time 10 seconds had passed! So, sorry, people, after many tries for one picture, we had to take two pictures to record all of us!
